Former Spain coach Luis Aragones passes away
Aragones was a prominent figure within the national game and led Spain to victory at Euro 2008, beating Germany in the final before ending a four-year spell at the helm.
He was also a successful coach at club level most notably with Atletico Madrid, leading them to the La Liga title in 1977 as well as three Copa del Rey trophies.
A statement from the RFEF read: "The Spanish Football Federation wants to express its grief and shock at the death of Luis Aragones, former player and coach of several Spanish and global clubs and the Spain national team at the beginning of their glorious success on the worldwide stage.
"Luis Aragones led the Spanish team to victory in the 2008 European Championships. He died today in Madrid Clinic, where he had been admitted."
Reports in the Spanish media said Aragones was admitted to the Madrid clinic in the early hours of Saturday morning but died soon after.
Aragones made his name as a player with Atletico between 1964 and 1974, making more than 350 appearances, winning three league titles and also representing Spain 11 times before hanging up his boots.
He then took up the reins with the Madrid club, the first of four spells at the helm in which he led them to six trophies and promotion from the Segunda Division in 2002.
Aragones also guided Barcelona to Copa del Rey success during his one season in charge of the Catalan club in 1987/88.
He then took charge of the national team in 2004, leading Spain to their first major title in 44 years at Euro 2008, the start of a hat-trick of tournament triumphs that continued under his successor Vicente Del Bosque at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
An ill-fated spell at Turkish side Fenerbahce followed, which came to an end in the summer of 2009, before Aragones officially announced his retirement in December last year - four years after leaving his final coaching post.
As well as his achievements at club and national level, Aragones will also be remembered for the media storm he caused in October 2004 after allegedly making racist remarks about former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.
Aragones was apparently trying to motivate Henry's then Arsenal team-mate Jose Reyes during a training session ahead of Spain's World Cup qualifier against Belgium when the incident occurred.
The Spain boss is alleged to have referred to Henry using racist language and told Reyes that he was the better player of the two.
The comments from Aragones were captured by cameras from TV station Antenna 3, prompting the coach to later issue an apology to the Frenchman.
Driver's mate sentenced to 700 days imprisonment
A driver's mate, arrested over the
snatching of GH¢4,070.00 cash from an ex-soldier, has been sentenced to
700 days imprisonment by the Nyinahin Magistrate's Court.
Gideon Agyei, 18, was convicted after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
He committed the crime on January 13 at Sreso-Timpom in the Atwima-Mponua District.
The ex-military man, Mr Martin Broni, was carrying the money in a polythene bag and as he attempted to board a bus, the convict snatched the bag and fled into the bush.
Police Inspector Daniel Otabil told the court, presided over by Mr Sam Nibi, that some young men in the community chased the convict and arrested him.
The prosecution said he was handed over to the police and that GH¢2,070.00 of the stolen amount was retrieved.
Dotse-Malor Bombs On First Assignment -Could it be incompetence or sabotage?
Mr Malor, whose appointment was met with scorn by members of the public and more interestingly members of the ruling NDC, released his first press release on Friday on the intent of government to cancel the contracts signed by the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority with companies belonging to the AGAMS Group of Companies.
Rather unpardonably, the so-called communications guru issued the release to all media houses and the public with a 2013 date, even though we are in 2014.
This very preventable error has initiated various discussions in the media landscape and on social media, with various persons in the media, including Umaru Sanda of Citi FM and Gabby Otchere-Darko, as well as renowned persons in Civil Society like Franklin Cudjoe of IMANI, raising questions over how such an unpardonable error could have been overlooked in the first official job of Mr Malor.
On Social media generally, various persons have wondered if this mistake by the expert is a sign of things to come while others even concluded that the error clearly betrays Mr Malor's competence and establishes the fact that his appointment was as usual one of the 'job for the boys' appointments that has become characteristic of President John Mahama.
Another obvious irregularity with the press release issued and signed by Mr Dotsei-Malor was the change in his portfolio from what was announced. Even though he was announced as Head of Communications at the Presidency, he identified himself in his Press Release as the Spokesperson to the President, prompting questions over whether there had already been a subtle change in his portfolio and whether elements like Stan Dogbe who were known to be in charge of Communications at the Presidency had succeeded in demoting Dotsei-Malor from his announced position.
Rather interestingly, Stan Dogbe who was rumored to have been upset by the appointment of Mr Dotsei-Malor, on a post he was tagged in on the errors in the press release and questions it raised, commented that he (Stan Dogbe) should not be tagged in 'such Hogwash'. It is not known whether the ‘Hogwash’ refers to the Press Release of Mr Dotsei Malor as Stan failed to make any further comments to clarify himself.
While Mr Dotsei-Malor has come in for heavy bashing on radio and on social media for his blunders, some have also come to his defence and suggested that the errors contained in the telease could just be the first signals of the sabotage Mr Dotsei -Malor would suffer from persons in government who are not happy with his appointment.
South African opposition party's plan to field black candidate crumbles Democratic Alliance accuses Mamphela Ramphele of reneging on deal to join party before this year's presidential elections
A historic pact enabling South Africa's main opposition party to field a black presidential candidate for the first time has collapsed in less than a week.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) accused anti-apartheid stalwart Mamphela Ramphele of reneging on a deal to join the party before this year's elections and said "she cannot be trusted".
The acrimonious end to one of the shortest, most shambolic political marriages in history underlines the struggle of South Africa's numerous opposition parties to mount a united challenge to the two-decade dominance of the African National Congress (ANC).
Last Tuesday the DA, eager to shake off its reputation as a party reflecting white interests, paraded Ramphele – a co-founder of the black consciousness movement who was mother to Steve Biko's children – as its candidate for president.
Kissing and embracing DA leader Helen Zille at a press conference in Cape Town, Ramphele declared: "We are taking away that race card and putting it in the dustbin."
But media reports suggested the united front was a facade amid confusion over the fate of Ramphele's own party, Agang SA, whose members angrily complained that they had not been informed.
By Friday Ramphele had issued a statement publicly contradicting the DA's claim that she would accept DA membership and insisting she is still leader of Agang SA.
After crunch talks on Sunday, the DA announced that the deal was off. Zille, a long-time friend of Ramphele who revealed Biko's death in custody during her days as a journalist, said: "Dr Ramphele reneged on the agreement that she stand as the DA's presidential candidate, and that Agang SA's branches, members and volunteers be incorporated into the DA.
"This about-turn will come as a disappointment to the many South Africans who were inspired by what could have been a historic partnership."
Ramphele, a 66-year-old medical doctor, academic and businesswoman, had been in talks with the DA since early last year but turned down its initial offer to launch Agang SA, only to return to the negotiating table after her party made little impact.
Zille added: "By going back on the deal, again, just five days after it was announced, Dr Ramphele has demonstrated – once and for all – that she cannot be trusted to see any project through to its conclusion. This is a great pity.
"Since Tuesday's announcement, Dr Ramphele has been playing a game of cat and mouse – telling the media one thing, Agang supporters another thing and the DA another.
"It is not clear what her objective is, but whatever it is, it is not in the interests of the South African people."
South Africa's Sunday Times reported that Ramphele and Zille had a "frosty exchange" less than an hour before Tuesday's press conference after Ramphele suggested that she would be presidential candidate for both the DA and Agang SA.
The now ex-spokesman of Agang SA found out about the DA deal just an hour before the press conference, the paper added.
Many political commentators were sceptical from the start. Eusebius McKaiser, author of the new book Could I Vote DA?, said the DA had been "panic stricken" and "tried to pull a fast one" over voters by parachuting in a black candidate.
"It's a demonstration of what happens when you make a hasty decision without due diligence. It was a massive and avoidable political blunder on the part of the DA."
The spectacular disintegration of the dream ticket is likely to afford some schadenfreude to the ANC, which, while assured of victory, is facing its toughest election yet.
McKaiser added: "For the ANC it's a gift. The embarrassment speaks for itself. Mamphela Ramphele's reputation is in tatters. The DA has been anxious to get a black African face irrespective of whether it's the right person."

Islamic Scholar Sexually Assaults His Pupils (PHOTOS, WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT)
As reported by dailyguideghana:
A 32-year-old islamic teacher identified as Mallam Ibrahim Salley has been smoked out of his hiding place by the police for allegedly abusing children sexually.
He was arrested by the police at his hideout at Asensu Bar in Ashaiman, away from the Valco Flats location where he lived.
A neighbour had expressed concern about the activities of the Mallam (or teacher) but he was asked to provide evidence by the persons to whom he complained. When he finally came out with a pictorial evidence of the man, naked, as one of the pupils was sucking his penis, the picture spread quickly in the neighbourhood.
Mallam Ibrahim Salley had absconded after he was physically confronted by residents who saw pictures in which pupils of his Islamic school he runs at Valco Flats, a suburb of Ashaiman were sucking his penis.
It was gathered that he also has sexual intercourse with the pupils.
Reacting to sexual abuse, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, expressed disgust at the
incident and prayed that adequate investigation would be conducted and if indeed the said Mallam Ibrahim Salley was engaged in the sexual abuse of kids, he should be dealt with according to law.
He said, "It is against both the law and Islam to engage in the sexual abuse of kids as the man is alleged to have done. I condemn such an act, if it was really done, in no uncertain terms, and ask that the law is applied appropriately when it is proven beyond reasonable doubt that he had committed the crime."
The police have commenced investigation into the matter while Mallam Ibrahim Salley has been transferred to the CID headquarters.

Princess Estelle enjoys snowy sleigh ride
On Saturday the family visited the Swedish city of Umea, to celebrate it recently being named the European Capital of Culture, with Estelle taking centre stage.
While 36-year-old Victoria is still suffering from a sprained ankle, it was her young daughter who bagged a seat on the miniature wooden sleigh.

Dressed in a cute white hat, a pink jacket, black trousers and boots, Estelle beamed as Daniel pulled the sleigh through the falling snow.
Sweden's future queen will be celebrating her second birthday on 23 February, just a day before her aunt Princess Madeleine is due to give birth. Madeleine and her husband Chris O'Neill are expecting a baby girl at the end of the month. The baby will be born in New York where the couple live.

Estelle proved herself a dab hand in snowy conditions when she hit the slopes on New Year's Eve. The youngster was kitted out in a spotty all-in-one skisuit to keep the wintry chill at bay. Her parents put their little one's safety first with a blue helmet.
Princess Victoria, however, was out of action as she sprained her ankle on the trip to Cervinia in the Italian Alps.
The mum-of-one hasn't let her injury hold her back though, and she has continued to undertake numerous royal enagements.
Me, wife & marriage by Aki
I find it a little bit funny when people go out of their ways to make resolutions they seldom keep. I don’t do resolutions. What I do is ask God to strengthen me, make me a better person. Give me a good heart to continue to do good to my fellow human beings; that is about it. On project outside the industry, a lot is in the pipeline but honestly I will rather not talk about it for now. As things unfold, I will keep you in the loop. By God’s grace, I will do more charity for kids this year; it is very sad that we have lots of kids in the street. They are not much different from us. We were just luckier to have hard working parents and more opportunities, otherwise some of us would have ended up like them. They are victims through no fault of theirs. So by the grace of God, I will invest more time and money to bring succour to as much of them as I can.
Any plans to involve the Presidency in the project?
I have done series of proposals to the Presidency and other contacts like governors, and I believe they are giving them attention. It is one thing to send a proposal, yet it is another thing to have it approved. I believe with time it will be. For now, we are doing what we can with the little resources we can muster through our Aki and Pawpaw Child Care Foundation. There is a lot more to be done though.
Coping without a father for the past seven months
It has been difficult but life must go on. When I lost my father, I lost a friend and a mentor. As the first son and the eldest, all the responsibilities are now on me but like you know, God will never give us more than we can carry. It is tough but I am coping. I have to be strong for my mother and my siblings.
On the rumoured break up with his wife
Until you can put food on the table of bloggers and journalists (with all due respect) you are not yet a celebrity. Such news does not bother me; you know it is not true, you are very close to me and you have unrestricted access to my home. If my wife has moved out like they claim, you would have known. My marriage is one hundred and ten percent intact and it will remain so by the grace of God. The lunch we just had was prepared by my wife. She just stepped out to pick something from her shop. She has been working round the clock for the launch of her fashion label – NIKIZ – on February 16. Those who said we are no more together had better come to Oriental Hotels and see for themselves. I don’t know what those feeding such lies to the public hope to achieve. Anyway, I just see it as a desperate act of bloggers to put food on their table. As a celebrity, if there is no news, they will be forced to create news for you. That is how they draw visitors to their site; that is how they sell their papers. It is sad that some of them don’t know the damage they do with such stories. Sometime last year, a blogger posted that I and Osita Iheme had an accident on our way to Niger State. Our families, friends and fans were very disturbed by that wicked and baseless report, very sad indeed. Our people should be more thorough before they post anything on the internet. Just a phone call to me would have clarified the situation; instead they caused a major trauma to my well wishers.
Favourite food
I am not gluttonous. I eat moderately. I love vegetable soup a lot, another favourite soup of mine is this soup from the South South area, Fisherman soup. I love the soup so much. My wife has now perfected the act of cooking it. I usually enjoy it with pounded yam.
Exercise
I have a thread mill I use at home. There are other equipments for exercise I own too. I also go out to play football. I take it easy, of course; it is fun and exercise for me. No club signed me for 18 millions pounds so I don’t play to stress or injure myself rather to work out and have fun.
Any advice for the youth?
Be the best you can be by putting your mind to do what you are doing. very well. You don’t know who is watching.
