With Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys working together on the same movie, there's a good bet it's going to be a powerful piece, but when you add First Lady Michelle Obama's unwavering support, powerful is pretty much a done deal.

"The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete" is that kind of movie. So much so, that before executive producer Keys screened it at the White House last month, the First Lady told a group of influential educators, “This is truly one of my favorite films this year, and it obviously has moved me, and it will be the guiding post for my work over the next three years.”

High praise for director George Tillman's independently produced survival tale/coming-of-age story, and unexpected praise at that.

"I was very shocked that she even screened the film. I was like, 'Wow!' I was a little nervous about it," Hudson said, speaking by phone Monday from her home in Chicago. "I actually didn't know until the day that she was doing it. I was like, 'Michelle is screening this at the White House? Oh my God that's amazing!' And to see a project reach that far and to be screened by the First Lady was amazing. That makes an impact to the people that can help make a difference."

That Mrs. Obama wanted to show influential educators the film is what surprised Keys the most. "When I first was looking at this piece and what it meant to me, I didn’t really look at it in that way. But to actually look at it through that scope of how education plays such a huge part in our directive, and where we go in our life, and the support in our life, and how that brings parents and teachers together, and how that allows young people to have opportunity through a whole other different level is an underlying theme of this piece, even though I didn’t recognize it off the bat," Keys told us in a separate phone call yesterday from New York City.

Keys's surprise might stem from the fact that very little of the film takes place in an actual school. Most of the action centers around two inner-city kids, Mister (Skylan Brooks) and Pete (Ethan Dizon), falling hard and fast through the proverbial cracks. After Mister’s mom (Hudson) gets arrested, the two friends spend the summer dodging the housing authorities, trying to feed themselves, and fending off the dangers of their Brooklyn projects.  All the while, Mister clings to his dreams of being an actor.

The film also features Hudson's fellow "American Idol" alum Jordin Sparks. It's interesting to note that two "Idol" contestants star in a movie (produced by a Grammy-winning R&B star) about a young man chasing his far-off dreams, even in the face of peril.

"You make the dream. Don't let it make you," said Hudson on the topic. "Because a lot of times people lose themselves along their journey of discovering their dream and realizing it and achieving it. So, it depends on if you can hold on to your character, remain who you are, and not let it change you or take you over."

"Dreams are so important to have, and they save us. They save us because they make us get up that one more day and try one more time to do one more thing. And that’s really all that everything is about, because if we do it long enough it will happen," said Keys. "So I do think the dark side of dream chasing is not having a dream at all."

Certainly Mrs. Obama has big dreams about kids like Mister and Pete realizing their own dreams, which she outlines in the video below. While it will take plenty of effort, the First Lady's got two real-life dream-achievers in Hudson and Keys to help her get the job done.

"The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete" is available today on DVD, Digital HD, Video on Demand, and Pay-Per-View.

Ghana President John Mahama Brother Settles Merchant Bank

Engineers & Planners Company Limited (E&P) has settled its outstanding debt of $28 million to Merchant Bank.
According to sources close to the deal, the payment, made last Friday, represents the total amount owed Merchant Bank by Ibrahim Mahama, a brother to President John Dramani Mahama.
The amount was transferred by Afrexim Bank to the offshore account of Merchant Bank through Citi Bank N.A., New York.
The move has been commended by market watchers who believe it will help improve the financial position of the bank, which has been through trying times recently as a result of some huge debts.
It would be recalled that Merchant Bank Ghana Limited gave a 21-day ultimatum to its known debtors through an advertisement in the newspapers on Tuesday, January 14, 2013, a week after President Mahama tasked the bank to form a task force to go after its debtors.
The defaulters were required to settle all their indebtedness to the bank from the date the advertisement was published in the newspapers.
The new management of the bank, led by Niila Selormey, said it was determined to recover the monies, regardless of the personalities involved.
The bank stated that failure by the debtors to honour their debt obligations would compel Merban Assets Recovery Trust (MART), its subsidiary to publish their names and the amounts of money they owed it after a grace period of five working days from the deadline indicated in the advertisement.
Fortiz Private Equity Fund announced that it was the legal and registered owner of 90 per cent shares of Merchant Bank.
Fortiz made full payment for shares of Merchant Bank (Ghana) Limited by the transfer of funds held at the Bank of Ghana into the operating account of Merchant Bank (Ghana) Limited.
The remaining 10 percent shares of the bank are split between SSNIT and SIC Life, which respectively own 8.96 percent
and 1.04 percent.

Technology giant Microsoft has announced that Satya Nadella will be its next chief executive.

Indian-born Mr Nadella is currently Microsoft's head of Cloud and Enterprise, which builds and runs the firm's computing platforms and developer tools.
He takes over from Steve Ballmer who announced plans to step down last year.
Company founder Bill Gates said there was "no better person to lead Microsoft".
Mr Gates is stepping down as chairman, it was also announced, but will take up a new role as a technology adviser and will also retain a seat on Microsoft's board.
Microsoft's lead independent director John Thompson will take over as chairman.
'Proven leader' "Microsoft is one of those rare companies to have truly revolutionised the world through technology, and I couldn't be more honoured to have been chosen to lead the company," said Mr Nadella.

Bill Gates: 'Satya has the right background'

"The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must focus clearly, move faster and continue to transform. A big part of my job is to accelerate our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly."
Mr Nadella, 46, is Microsoft's third chief executive. The Hyderabad-born executive joined the company in 1992 and has degrees in electronics, computer science and business administration.
He previously led its server and tools business before being put in charge of the unit that built Microsoft's Cloud OS service, which powers products such as Bing, Skype and Xbox Live.
"During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella," said Mr Gates.

A pastor in Zimbabwe has been sentenced to spend the next half century in prison after he was found guilty of raping 4 female members of his congregation.
Robert Martin Gumbura, the spiritual leader of the “Robert Martin Gumbura Independent End Time Message Church”, is said to have claimed that all female members of his church were his wives.
Gumbura, who has 11 wives and 30 children, had 10 years taken off his sentence because it was his first conviction.
The Times reports:

The court heard that Gumbura, 57, claimed that all female members of his church were his wives by right, and married women were on loan from their husbands.
“You were a real wolf in sheepskin,” said magistrate Hoseah Mujaya. The core business of any church is worshipping and not sleeping with girls and women and threaten them
that misfortune will befall them.”
The rapes are said to have occurred more than a decade ago. The pastor, who has 11 wives and 30 children, had wanted to sire 100 children.
His conviction included a four-month term for a separate charge of possession of pornographic videos.In his defence, Gumbura stated the DVDs were private recordings with his wives.
Cases of church leaders abusing women are common in Zimbabwe. Last month a leader of an apostolic sect made news after it was revealed that he had impregnated 13 women in one month.

Dencia Admits Her Whitenicious Cream Will Bleach Your Skin

In a new interview with Ebony Magazine, Cameroonian pop singer, Dencia finally admitted her new skin care cream, Whitenicious will bleach your skin if you use it all over your body. But she insists that's not why she is selling it. That her cream is in fact helping women overcome an obstacle which is dark spots when they use it.
Here's what Dencia said in the interview:

• EBONY: So you know there’s been a lot of buzz about you on the internet here lately. Everybody’s talking about your new skin care line, Whitenicious.

Dencia:  And I’m happy that they’re talking because my sales are skyrocketing.

• EBONY: Okay. But do you understand people’s response to the pictures and advertisement for Whitenicious which says “Say goodbye to pigmentation and spots forever.”

The picture clearly says “Say goodbye to dark spots and hyperpigmentation.” I’m not saying “say goodbye to your Black skin and try to be like Dencia.” That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying “say goodbye to dark spots and hyperpigmentation. I have men, White men, Black men, buying Whitenicous. And guess what
they’re using it for? Dark spots. Not to bleach their entire skin. I don’t think a White man is trying to bleach his skin.
Trust me, I’ve been running this business for the past three weeks and I’ve read all these emails from girls telling me about how they have this hyperpigmentation, how they have these dark spots. I have seen so many pictures. These girls are not trying to bleach their skin. They’re just trying to get rid of these little things that is making them feel uncomfortable, you know?

•  EBONY: I hear you, I do. And you’re right, many women of African descent, many women of color, we do suffer from hyperpigmentation.  So there are lots of products on the market that work to fade out those spots, if you will. But there are also products… and you know this, especially in West Africa. We see the billboards, we see them in the markets, we see the women with all of the damage on their skin – there are products out there that are used to bleach the skin. Your product is called Whitenicious, of course people will buy it because they want to bleach.

Dencia: Ok. Will Whitenicious bleach your skin if you use it on all your skin? Yes, it will. Are we selling Whitenicous for that purpose? No, we’re not. Whitenicous comes in 30 ml and 60ml. You cannot use the 60 ml to bleach your whole skin. It’s impossible. And that costs about $150 each.
60 ml can’t even go on your whole feet. I don’t see anybody spending all that money to bleach their entire skin. I don’t see that happening. Now, do I have customers who come and buy stuff for over $2000? Yes, I do. Do I ask them what they want to do with it? No, I don’t. Do I know what they want to do with it? No, I don’t care because it’s their money, it’s how they want to spend it.

And in the video, the young girl, aged about two or three, puts the cigarette into her mouth and inhales several times before breathing out dark smoke. The clip, which has been uploaded to YouTube, is believed to have been taken in Finland and has caused public outrage, with people posting angry comments like:

'Must originate from her sick parents or siblings. Persons under 18 are not allowed to either sell or purchase tobacco in Finland.
